My work is drawn from images and experiences in the natural world. Painting is a means to connect to an inner narrative and access my subconscious, a way for me to distill my feelings with color and form. I believe that paint has a language of its own, as well as the image, which contributes to the content of a painting. There is an emotional resonance to be engaged with on the canvas. Lately I have been making collages with the intent of using them as painting starts… and the collages have given me many new ideas about color and shapes. Sometimes I work from several at once and sometimes my sketches work their way into the colors. I am not interested in having paintings be completely resolved and defined, but prefer some ambiguity and mystery. My interpretation of nature is a scruffy romantic elegance without being overly sentimental.
