I paint contemporary southwest landscapes. This allows me to combine my great love of the the southwest and the outdoors. It provides me an outlet for my love of, and need to, draw and paint and my passion for hiking the southwestern landscape.
I tend to sketch outside, take notes & photos as I hike around experiencing the landscapes. While informed by being outdoors, these are studio paintings. I start with observations and inspirations from being in the landscape. As the paintings take shape they often their own needs and I am open to that. I take them where they tell me they need to go.

While making these paintings I engage in a dialog with the landscape and at the same time I dialog with other artists, current and historic, whose visions excite, challenge, goad, and inspire me whether it is David Hockney, Loraine Stephanson, Fairfield Porter, Richard Diebenkorn or Lois Dodd. My paintings are contemporary landscape paintings of the American West that reflect the terroir, the sound, light and energy that is uniquely southwestern.

Bio:
Shelley Hull studied painting at Yale University and graduated with a BA in Art in 1977, and received an MFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1979.

Her work has been shown throughout the US in group and one person shows. She was invited to participate in the Art in Embassies (AIE) program and had paintings displayed at the US Ambassadorial Residences in Suva, Fiji 2015 – 16 and the Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2016 – 2017. One of her paintings was selected to hang in the Colorado Senate Office of Cory Gardner in Washington, DC in 2015 – 17.

Shelley won awards such as First Place in The Art of Nature (2019), Honorable Mention in Green Verde Vert (2018), Best of Show in This is Colorado (2017), Honorable Mention – The Shock of the New West (2018), 2nd Place – Visions of Flint Hill (2017), Outstanding Acrylic – WAOW Exhibit (2016), Honorable Mention – Contemporary Painting GJAC (2015), Jerry’s Materials Award ISAP Exhibition (2013). She was Artist-in-Residence (Mancos State Park Colorado 2006), won a Work-In-Progress Grant from MD (1982) a NEA Visual Artist Fellowship (1984).
